Her Highness, Vata

Vata is called the queen of the doshas. It controls all the others, is responsible for many processes in the body and a whole bunch of health problems. As a queen, Vata has priority. Before you, Vata in all its glory.

In the previous blog entry Prakriti, vikriti, test for determining the dominant dosha, you can find a test to determine your constitution. As I wrote in the mentioned post, pure types of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are extremely rare. We are a real mix of all three, so take a good look at all of them, and since it is usually Vata that causes all imbalances in the body and usually problems with the other doshas begin with Vata’s growth, it is worth keeping an eye on it. This test clearly shows that Vata is full of extremes. Vata – type person is always on the edge. It brings a visible contrast when compared to the descriptions of people in Pitta type which are often moderate, described with terms like „medium” / „average”, and typical Kapha type for whom everything is „stable” / „slow”.

Instead of describing too much, let’s feel Vata.  Imagine walking on the beach on a clear, dry, windy day. It’s late autumn. You feel the gentle rays of the sun on your face, the wind blows your hair. You experience lightness, enjoy the view of the vast space that stretches out before you. However, when you stay on the beach for a long time, exposed to strong gusts of wind, you will gradually begin to feel internal instability, unbalance, indefinable anxiety.

Vata’s strengths, or Vata in balance

Vata is enthusiasm and creativity in its pure form. Hundreds of ideas, projects, and plans per minute pass through the mind of a person with the dominance of Vata dosha. Since they are extremely spontaneous, they like to throw themselves into the whirlwind of creation, preferably doing everything at once, without thinking too much about the results and often not following through. Vata type person likes changes and easily adapts to them. They are curious about the world, love traveling, feel good surrounded by people, need stimulation. Vata’s strengths are also vitality, generosity, openness, and joy.

Troubles in paradise, or, how to know that Vata is off balance

Even if Pitta or Kapha prevails in your constitution, your Vata may also be affected. As energy of movement in the body and mind, it is most susceptible to disorders. The times of hustle and bustle we are living in are not conducive to Vata’s balance.  How do you know that your Vata is not all right? At first glance, an increase in dryness in the body. Dry skin, dry hair, chapped lips, dry mouth, dry, irritated throat. Disturbed Vata negatively influences digestive fire, so we are dealing with flatulence, gas, constipation. At the level of the mind, you can note problems with concentration, distraction, forgetfulness, confusion. Over excitement, but also lethargy. It is Vata who ranks the highest peaks and lowest pits.  A Vata-like person, going through a rough patch, tends to self-blame, feels overwhelmed, often lacks motivation for change, and even they know what to do to help themselves, their inconsistency doesn’t let them follow through.

Reasons for excessive growth of Vata dosha

„Like increases like. Opposite qualities bring balance” – the basic principle of Ayurveda may be the answer to this question. So we’re back to the theory of the five elements. Vata manifests the qualities of space and air – movement, lightness, cold, elusiveness, dryness, roughness, mobility. And these qualities are found on the physical and emotional level. If you will “feed” your Vata with food with similar characteristics, Vata levels will increase. So no dry, crisp food – any wafers, crisps, crackers, wheat or rye bread, products containing yeast, unripe, acidic or dried fruit, fried fruit, fried vegetables, beans, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower. Mushrooms and soy products are also inadvisable. Avoid cold drinks and cold food.

Vata also inevitably increases if you eat it in a hurry, stay in the noise, go to bed late, take too much physical or intellectual effort, travel. Vata type person easily gets excited, their enthusiasm often drives them to exceed their abilities, hence the first step to disorder. The weather or the time of day is also important – Vata increases when it is dry, windy, and cold. Vata time of the day are sunrise and sunset. Vata also naturally increases after the age of 55.

How to pacify Vata? 

Well … „Like increases like. Opposite qualities bring balance. ” To lower the level of Vata, reach for warm, oily, thick food, the best flavors for Vata are sweet, sour, or salty. If salads, then only with olive oil or other greasy sauce. Stews, soups will work well. Fruit only ripe and sweet, preferably avocados, peaches, papayas, plums, grapes, berries, pineapples. Warming spices are great, nuts in small quantities previously soaked in water. And above all, a lot of warm liquids, no caffeine. And all that consumed peacefully, without rush and TV/computer in the background.

The key is to maintain a regular lifestyle, for Vata, routine is the key. Although Vata type person hates it, they need it most of all. A person like Vata with thousands of plans per minute needs a lot of rest and relaxation. Keep warm, dear Vata!
